THE SCHOOLS SHOULD FOCUS ON WHAT STUDENTS KNOW INSTEAD OF WHAT THEY DON'T. D U AGREE?
How does it look like in your country?
In Poland teachers focus mostly on what kids don't know instead of what they do.
Sadly, that is how the whole system works and worked in the past.
After reading a book a teacher verified whether you actually did it or not by asking very detailed questions, say concerning the parts of the garment of the main protagonist. But it does not matter at all and does not give any feedback when it comes to understanding the plot of the book. What difference does it make if Mary had a blue or yellow dress?
On the other hand, you have to verify it somehow and nobody found a better way than get into details. Summaries of the books don't go into too much detail, thus the verification process based on those.
There is also a very different approach coming from a Russian joke:
One of the students during an oral exam chooses a question printed on a piece of paper and puts it down, takes another, another and yet another – not the standard procedure -, normally you would draw a question and just face the music trying to answer it. But that student seems unsatisfied every time he draws a question.
Finally the professor, who has been observing the student for a while, says, give me your index, you'll get a C.
But why, how, it's not fair, he hasn't even answered a single question. - other students withstand.
He's looking for something, he must have learnt it. - says professor.
The original Russian version goes like this:
Во время устного экзамена, студент тянет билеты. Берёт один, но что-то ему не подходит, берёт второй, третий и т.д. Каждый раз он не доволен вопросу и ищет следующий.
Наконец профессор, который присматривал за студентом, говорит:
Давайте вашу зачётку, я дам вам тройку.
Но как так, он даже не ответил на ни один вопрос! - возмущаются другие студенты.
Что-то ищет, значит — что-то знает — говорит профессор.
