THE ASIAN ADVENTURE

A few years ago, my husband and I decided to go on a journey – it was almost 2 months in South-East Asia with a cruise.

We had analysed various package-tours and itineraries and created our own with personal interests only. I have worked several years as a tourist guide and I didn't want my honeymoon to be like work.

We flew in Singapore and that was the only hotel we booked. The rest was arranged on the spot according to our own meticulously prepared itinerary.

Every week I will publish one post with the sites we visited from one city or area during that journey.

You can guess what was next if you like or share your travelling adventures. Enjoy!

Should I learn 2 languages at once?

Should I learn 2 languages at once?

Many people ask me if they should learn 2 or even more languages at the same time. The thing is that if you want, nobody can stop you, but to my mind it wouldn't be very efficient.

There are several questions you need to answer:

  1. Why do I want to learn 2 languages at once. Isn't learning just one is challenging enough?

  2. Do I know one of the languages well enough already?

  3. Are the languages I want to learn somehow related?

  4. How much time do I want to invest in each of them?

  5. How fast do I want to learn them?

HOW TO CONTROL PROCRASTINATION?

What is procrastination? To put it shortly the ability of the human brain to avoiding changes and doing the things that don't push us out our comfort zone for as long as possible.

So if you feel the urge to do something, wait, let it pass, that's how we say in Poland. That is procrastination.

How to control it when it comes to language learning?

HOW TO NAIL THE RUSSIAN ALPHABET? PART 1

Learning a new script can be challenging and many people are put off when the language they consider learning involves getting acquainted with a different writing system. I have learned some languages because they have a different script and it was a very interesting experience.

Cyrilic Alphabet was created on the basis of the Greek alphabet from the Thessaloniki area brought by Cyril and Methodius in the 10th century A.D. Undergone some changes, including the Peter the Great reform in the 18th century when it became what we know today.

So how to learn the Russian script?

Tongue twisters / скороговорки / Zungenbrecher

Regardless of the language, we have a very international phenomenon, everywhere we go, we can find sentences that are difficult to pronounce, mostly for kids, but also for foreigners.

It is even more challenging, if a foreigner can pronounce them and a native speaker can't! :)

The thing is to have fun, it doesn't have to be long, complicated or boring, sometimes it seems easy, but actually it's not :)

Let's try to present a few most popular ones in a few languages, that I happen to know :)

The history of the word F**K

Some believe that it is an acronym of Fornication Under Consent of the King and people during coitus used to put that on their door. Don't believe that, it's just an example of funny folk etymology.

Similar words can be found in other Indo-European languages, such as German, Scandinavian languages, French and other Latin-based Romance languages, but to trace them you need to remember about the Grimm's law (explaining how words that to a naked eye are not cognates indeed are, thanks to consonants shifting, e.g. 'piscina' and 'basen' and 'pool' are indeed related).

(Italian) Borrowings: a way to learn languages faster

It's good to start with the words that you might actually know, no matter if they are lexical borrowings or loanwords or cognates.

Even if the language is quite distant to your mother tongue or the ones that you actually know, it is highly unlikely that they do not have words borrowed from one another.

Thanks to that approach you can actually be very surprised that the vocabulary of the language you are only planning to learn is quite ample. It might be because of historical paths crossed at some point, others borrow concepts or inventions together with vocabulary assigned to them.

How to learn the names of the days of the week in any language? MONDAY

I have always been fascinated with etymology, and wrote my MA thesis on borrowings. I find understanding of the language structure of utmost importance to learning it much faster and in a more effective way.

In different cultures the week starts with a different day. Since I am Polish, I'll discuss it from my point of view (and from point of view of ISO 8601, apparently).

Blending case study: a productive way of coining new words in English

Blending is a very productive process of word building in modern English. That is one of the ways to create neologisms. This is my favourite way of coining new words, simply because it is very creative. Plus, when you know what words coined the new word there is absolutely no problem to guess the meaning. The name of my company LANGcheck was actually coined in such a way blending LANGuage with CHECking. Let us analyse several examples:
